Reel Christianity

They say that the cinema is the cathedral of the masses and at MCC we take that idea seriously. When we watch movies we're doing something far more significant than just putting our brain in neutral. We are connecting, via narrative and story-telling, with the very foundation of what it means to be human. We are enjoying via the skills of those involved the co-creative abilities that God has bestowed on us. Plus, very often, we're having a great time as well.

At Reel Christianity, we look at movies through the lens of the Gospel. We have found that contemporary cinema is filled with a hunger and active searching for God, righteousness and meaning. So whether we are enjoying some dense, arduous European film like Dancer in the Dark or Will Ferrell's classic comedy Anchorman, we find in conversation afterwards over coffee, a new way to consider what it means to be a follower of Jesus in today's world.

We hold Reel Christianity three times a year on a Sunday evening in the MCC Resource Centre. Alongside that, every Valentine's Day we run the Alternative Valentines Event: where we invite you to come with no intentions of romance, dressed in your sloppiest, lounging around the house clothes to eat the least romantic food we can think of and watch a classic movie that has nothing to do with soppy, sentimental tosh about "lurve". Everyone is welcome, singles or couples, we just don't want any of your slushy couple crap that night!
