At MCC we are blessed to have people with a variety of musical talents who use their gifts to lead the church family in worship. Even so, we are always on the lookout for vocalists and instrumentalists who would like to dip their toe in the water by serving on a Sunday morning worship team. We believe that a wide variety of music and musical styles is a great way to worship God and is actually a foretaste of heaven;
“I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb” Rev 7:9
It also can be a positive way of connecting with people from many different backgrounds that God might bring to our church community. While we may not always get it right, our goals include “making old songs new”, perhaps by sometimes singing rich words hundreds of years old to contemporary tunes, while at the same time “keeping new songs from getting old”, resisting the urge to sing the same “new” songs over and over every week. Hopefully in MCC’s musical worship there is something for everyone.
While we aim for God-centred worship, we know that this is something that does not just happen—it must be nurtured in community. As a fellow worshippers we want to provide a supportive atmosphere where we remind ourselves that it is God—not the congregation—who is our audience. Our desire is to together discover and lead others in what authentic musical worship of God might look like.
Worship team members also support MCC in its important role of encouraging of the wider church. We share our musical gifts with others by helping out with things like student services, special worship services in other churches or by making road trips to churches around Ireland and letting them know what God is doing in our own community.
When you decide to serve as a part of a worship team you’ll have the freedom to try out your gifts and discover if working together to lead others musically is something you enjoy doing and are good at. Becoming involved does not mean committing yourself for the rest of your life but it does, however, mean telling someone that you’d like give it a try. The place to start is by checking with the worship leader on Sunday or by phoning the church office. The next step is to connect with the worship leader for an upcoming Sunday (the church office has the current rota) so that you can join the team for practice (usually for two hours on Saturday morning) and see what you think. We would love for you to come join us!
